Nights run cold up here - pack warm layers even in July.
Monte Cristo is the highest campground on the Ogden Ranger District, and you feel it the moment the sun drops. It sits about 30 miles east of Huntsville on State Route 39, the road toward Woodruff, which means a long, slow drive in from either side. The rules here are stricter than most Forest Service camps: no horses inside the campground, and ATVs have to be trailered at least a mile before you ride. Toilets are vaults, and potable water is on site.
Tip: One of the best late-September color camps in the state.
