Sand Island works as a San Juan River launch first and a campground second, so on trip mornings the ramp end of camp fills with trailers and people rigging boats. Pick a site away from it if you want a slow start. It is a plain setup, vault toilets and drinking water only in the warmer months, with about two dozen sites on the flat three miles west of Bluff on Highway 191. Town is close enough that a forgotten cooler is not a crisis.
Tip: Walk the rock art wall at golden hour.
