Why Fish Here

Burraston is the outlier in this group. The state lists it by a road address in Mona rather than a city park, which tells you most of what you need to know about amenities: bring your own shade, water and bathroom plan. It is on the community fishery list all the same, so the two-fish daily limit applies and carp do not count against it. The state also asks anglers to voluntarily release largemouth bass, which matters in a pond this size.

How To Fish It

Best rigs: Bobber + worm; Senkos for bass in the reeds

Bait and lures: Worms, PowerBait, plastics

Best time: Evenings. Season: All year

Local tip: Spring-fed ponds near Mona with a rope swing - an old-school Utah summer stop.

Species Playbook

Rainbow Trout

Rig: Slip-bobber or sliding sinker rig, 4 lb mono line, size 8-10 baitholder

Bait: PowerBait (rainbow/garlic), nightcrawler, small spinners (Panther Martin, Jake's)

When: Early morning & last 2 hours before dark

Utah's #1 fish. If a pond got stocked this week, cast anything shiny. Perfect first fish for kids.

Largemouth Bass

Rig: Texas-rigged worm near weeds; wacky rig Senko

Bait: Senkos, jigs, frogs over pads, topwater at dawn

When: Dawn topwater, evenings; pre-spawn (April-May) is prime

Look for submerged brush, tules, and shade lines.

Bluegill & Sunfish

Rig: Worm under a small bobber, size 10 hook - that's it

Bait: Worms, mealworms, tiny jigs

When: All day long, all summer

THE kid fish. Pelican Lake grows bluegill the size of dinner plates.

Why fish Burraston Ponds?
It reads like an old-fashioned swimming hole rather than a manicured city water, and that is the appeal. Bass and bluegill live here year round, trout arrive on the state stocking rotation, and the reeds give you something to actually cast at. Plan on keeping two fish at most.
