The Duchesne drains the south slope of the Uintas and changes character as it goes, from small trout water up top to a warmwater river by the time it meets the Green. The regulations follow that split: below the Knight Diversion it is under Green River tributary rules, where burbot, northern pike, smallmouth bass and walleye may not be released. Up high you are fishing browns and cutthroat in willow-lined bends, and the fish sit deeper than the water looks.

Best rigs: Nymph the deep bends; streamers in fall
Bait and lures: Flies, spinners
Best time: Morning & dusk. Season: May-October
Local tip: North Fork up toward Defa's Ranch is storybook water.

Brown Trout
Rig: Fly: sow bug/zebra midge under indicator; Spin: single-hook Rapala or spinner
Bait: Flies (sow bugs, streamers), Rapalas, worms after rain
When: Dawn, dusk, and overcast days; fall (spawn season) fires them up
Wary and smart. Downsize line to 4 lb fluoro on clear days.
Cutthroat Trout
Rig: Strawberry: white tube jig 15-30 ft; Bear Lake: troll minnow-profile lures
Bait: Tube jigs, dead minnows (where legal), dry flies in creeks
When: Morning bite is king; ice-off is legendary
The Bonneville cutthroat is Utah's state fish. Strawberry slot: release cutts 15-22 in.
Rainbow Trout
Rig: Slip-bobber or sliding sinker rig, 4 lb mono line, size 8-10 baitholder
Bait: PowerBait (rainbow/garlic), nightcrawler, small spinners (Panther Martin, Jake's)
When: Early morning & last 2 hours before dark
Utah's #1 fish. If a pond got stocked this week, cast anything shiny. Perfect first fish for kids.
