Very few places in the country let you park a car within a minute of an alpine lake, and Mirror Lake is one of them, sitting near the top of the 42-mile Mirror Lake Highway. That access is also the catch, since this is the most visited corner of the Uintas and the shoreline fills on summer weekends. A recreation pass is required to use the sites along the corridor, and the highway closes to cars each winter under heavy snow. There is a small boat ramp and vault toilets at the lake.

When: Early morning & last 2 hours before dark

Brook Trout
Rig: Ultralight spinner or bubble-and-fly rig
Bait: Small spinners, worms, ants/attractor dry flies
When: All day at altitude; evenings best in summer
Aggressive and gorgeous. Boulder Mountain grows Utah's biggest brookies.
Tiger Trout
Rig: Casting spoons or worm on slip-sinker
Bait: Jake's Spin-a-lure, Kastmaster, nightcrawlers
When: Early morning; excellent through the ice
