Why Fish Here

The thing to know before you go is that Newton is closed to the possession of tiger muskie. Every one you hook goes back, so bring long pliers and a net big enough to hold a fish in the water while you work the hook out. DWR asks you not to lift a muskie into the boat, never to grab it by the gills, and to keep it out of the water no more than thirty seconds for a photo. Whole fish are also not legal as bait here.

How To Fish It

Best rigs: Steel leader + glide bait for muskie; plastics for bass

Bait and lures: Big swimbaits, Senkos, worms

Best time: Dawn/dusk. Season: May-September

Local tip: Sleeper tiger muskie water in Cache Valley without Pineview's crowds.

Why fish Newton Reservoir?
Newton is a quiet Cache Valley reservoir with a real tiger muskie population that most anglers drive past. It is a release fishery, though, so plan on photos rather than fillets. Largemouth and bluegill give you something to do between muskie casts at dawn and dusk.
