Why Fish Here

Grantsville is one of the few Utah waters where the guidebook tells you to kill fish instead of releasing them. There is no limit on smallmouth bass here, and the rule says any bass you catch must not go back in the water, so read that page before you launch. Trout are still why most people come. Tooele County runs the shoreline recreation area with pavilions and vault toilets but no drinking water, and camping is first come, first served.

How To Fish It

Best rigs: Slip-sinker + PowerBait; spoons at ice-off

Bait and lures: PowerBait, worms, spoons

Best time: Morning. Season: All year

Local tip: Tooele County's reliable trout tank below the Stansburys.

Bait: Tube jigs, dead minnows (where legal), dry flies in creeks

When: Morning bite is king; ice-off is legendary

The Bonneville cutthroat is Utah's state fish. Strawberry slot: release cutts 15-22 in.
