Why Fish Here

Joes Valley is managed for size, not numbers. Only one of the trout you keep may be over 18 inches, and that fish counts against your statewide limit, which is the reason splake here reach weights you will not see at most Utah reservoirs. It sits in a steep canyon on Manti-La Sal National Forest ground, so the water stays cold and the fish hold deep through summer. Winter is when it really shines, because the ice puts you on top of them.

How To Fish It

Best rigs: Jig + minnow piece deep for splake (check bait regs); big lures for muskie

Bait and lures: Jigs + sweetener, tubes

Best time: Morning; ice season shines. Season: All year

Local tip: Trophy splake water with special regs - giants over 10 lbs.
