For three years the largest military installation in the United States sat in the little valley town of Fairfield. Buchanan sent 3,500 soldiers, close to a third of the entire U.S. Army, and the town grew seventeen saloons to meet them. Almost none of it survives, so this is a museum stop rather than a ruin field: three buildings and a cemetery where about thirty graves were found with ground-penetrating radar and marked. John Carson's two-story adobe inn was the first stop south of Salt Lake City on the Overland Stage route.
