Brook Trout

Why Target Them

Brook trout are the payoff for gaining elevation. They fill Uinta lakes and beaver ponds nobody has bothered to name, they eat almost anything, and a beginner with one spinner can have a very good day. The tradeoff is size, since outside a few waters these are small fish. Boulder Mountain is the exception, and it produced the state record at 7 pounds 8 ounces in 1971.

Why fish for Brook Trout in Utah?
Because they are the most willing trout in Utah and they live in the prettiest water. Brook trout stack up in high Uinta and Boulder Mountain lakes where they will hit a small spinner or a dry fly all day. They count toward the statewide combined limit of 4 trout, so keeping a few for the pan is fair game.
