Why Fish Here

The rule that shapes this place is simple: you cannot keep a cutthroat or any trout with cutthroat markings, so every one goes back. That leaves the tigers as the fish to take home, and it is why the reservoir built its reputation for oversized ones. It is small water, about 136 acres, with a 10-horsepower cap on motors, so a float tube or a canoe covers it fine. Day use only, restrooms but no drinking water, and the road in is UT-31.

How To Fish It

Best rigs: Cast spoons at ice-off; wooly buggers from a tube

Bait and lures: Spoons, buggers (check tackle regs)

Best time: Ice-off frenzy. Season: June-October

Local tip: On the Skyline Drive at 9,000 ft - former state-record tiger trout water.

Why fish Huntington Reservoir (Mammoth)?
Tiger trout are the draw, and Huntington was the water that produced Utah's record. It sits high on the Skyline Drive country off UT-31, where ice comes off late and the first few weeks after are the best of the year. Cutthroat must be released, so plan on catch and release for those.
