Steinaker is a working irrigation reservoir first and a playground second, filled by a canal off a diversion dam on Ashley Creek and held for Ashley Valley farms. That practical job is easy to forget when you are on the sandy beach, which has a swim dock, or towing a wakeboard at 5,500 feet. It is a short hop north of Vernal, so you can fish rainbow trout and largemouth bass in the morning and be at a dinosaur museum by noon. Every boat needs current AIS certification before it launches.
