Bluegill & Sunfish

Why Target Them

Bluegill are Utah's teaching fish, and the state treats them that way with a 50 a day limit, bluegill and green sunfish combined. The trap is that a lot of the water you would take a kid to is a community fishery, where the daily limit drops to two fish, so the pond in the park and the reservoir on the map play by different rules. Size matters more than people expect: Utah's record bluegill, 2 pounds 8 ounces from Quail Creek in 2024, was over 12 inches.
